Abstract

This article discusses the fieldwork and methodological strategies of the ICOLMA project in São Paulo, Cape Town, and Dortmund. It examines the piloting and cultural adaptation of the Maptionnaire questionnaire, the organization and training of research teams, and the application of mixed methods in the field. Particular attention is given to the use of Thematic Analysis, highlighting its strengths, limitations, and the adjustments required to capture local realities. The chapter emphasizes the importance of flexible methodologies, community engagement, and context-sensitive coding in research on vulnerable groups during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Author Biographies

Gabriel Machado Araujo, Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)

He holds undergraduate degrees in Science and Humanities, Territorial Planning, and Philosophy from UFABC, where he is currently a master’s student in the Territorial Planning and Management (PGT) program. Researcher on the ICOLMA/TAP-FAPESP project, dedicated to studying the impacts of COVID-19 on mobility and livelihoods of marginalized groups. He engages in national and international research collaborations (UFABC, USP, UNAM, UAEM, USF, TU Dortmund, UCT, and UWT), with an emphasis on geoinformation methods applied to territorial planning. He also develops studies in contemporary political philosophy and environmental epistemology.

Letícia Ueda Vella, Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)

Letícia Ueda Vella is a lawyer with a degree from the Law School of the University of São Paulo (FD/USP), a specialization in human rights from the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), and a postgraduate degree in violence prevention and response from the Santa Casa Medical School. She is a master’s student in Territorial Planning and Management at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC) and is dedicated to researching the impact of the pandemic on public policies aimed at women experiencing violence.

Tanja Schnittfinke, TU Dortmund

Tanja Schnittfinke is a research associate at the research group of Regional Development and Risk Management at TU Dortmund University. Her work focuses on urban resilience, social inequality and criticality. Currently undergoing her Phd, her research explores how disruptions of services of general interest affect vulnerable populations during times of crisis.

Beatriz Milz, Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)

Beatriz Milz holds a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management from the University of São Paulo (USP), a master’s degree in Sciences from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), and a PhD in Environmental Science from USP. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), affiliated with the ICOLMA/TAP-FAPESP project. She is part of the executive team of the journals Ambiente & Sociedade and Revista Diálogos Socioambientais, and serves as a Software Peer Review Editor at rOpenSci.
