The present study aimed to analyze the possibilities of using technological patent prospecting, especially those in the public domain, as a strategy to support the public management of Brazilian cities in addressing issues related to the management and treatment of solid waste. The research is applied in nature and adopts a qualitative-quantitative approach. Regarding its objectives, it is exploratory, with the intention of identifying and evaluating patents in the public domain through data collection procedures. A preliminary analysis revealed a striking discrepancy between the volume of patents registered in Brazil compared to other nations, raising the possibility of a gap between identified deficiencies and implemented measures. Among the identified patents, Patents A and C emerged as highlights, not only as viable alternatives to replace landfills and conventional dumps but also as innovative solutions that play a prominent role in the perspective of renewable and sustainable energy sources.
