Abstract

This article aimed to analyze the institutional racism associated with ageism in the footwear industry in the market of Nova Serrana - MG. As a methodology, qualitative research was applied to evaluate this dimension in the local productive area. The study pointed out that, in the perception of most managers responsible for recruitment and selection, there is no such discrimination; however, the deepening of the investigation made it clear that older people are, almost always, referred to simpler tasks, or occupy positions of higher hierarchical level, as these are occupations that require more experience. Another reality evidenced in this study indicates that the hiring of older professionals is also because they are more stable and stay longer in the job. This work contributes to opportunities for improvement and suggests promoting new and more comprehensive research, contemplating new market niches.
