Abstract

This text concerns a letter written by Descartes to Pierre Chanut on June 6, 1647. In this letter, Descartes clarifies his conception of the extent of the universe, characterizing it as indefinite. It is within this context that the philosopher discusses the interest shown by Christina, the Swedish monarch, in philosophical questions. Furthermore, in this letter, Descartes criticizes theologically inspired anthropocentrism, asserting the possibility that intelligent creatures may exist around other stars. Consequently, this text addressed to Chanut holds particular significance for Cartesian studies, as the author deals with theological, physical, and speculative themes in a novel way.

Author Biography

Rafael Teruel Coelho, São Paulo University (USP)

Ph.D. candidate in the History of Modern Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH-USP), where he earned his master’s degree in 2021. From March 2024 to February 2025, he completed a doctoral research internship at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Paul Rateau. In 2016, he earned his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the São Paulo State University “Júlio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP), during which he participated in an international exchange program (sandwich program) at the University of Coimbra in Portugal (2014). He is currently a doctoral fellow at the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and conducts research on the philosophy of Elizabeth of Bohemia and René Descartes, particularly regarding the nature of the soul and substantial union. He is interested in topics related to 17th-century metaphysics, particularly as addressed in the context of the philosophical thought of Elizabeth of Bohemia, René Descartes, Baruch Spinoza, and Nicolas Malebranche. Since 2019, he has been a member of the Spinoza Study Group at the University of São Paulo.
