Abstract

As a realization of a certain proposal for a research program in the philosophy of linguistics, I present a description and evaluation of the scope and function of certain heuristic resources in generative grammar. In the practice of this theory, there is a predominant use of hierarchical representations as heuristic tools—especially representations of constituent “embedding” and tree diagrams—in order to make evident the relations between phrases and the generative character of sentences themselves. Taking into account the works of Alistair Crombie, Otávio Bueno, and Valter Alnis Bezerra on styles of scientific reasoning/thinking, as well as Ronald Giere’s work on representational models, one may ask how the use of such diagrams as heuristic resources was established in the development of generative grammar, what reasons made them productive within the theoretical framework of that theory, and how they are linked to the analysis of what generative grammar regards as evidence for problem-solving.
