The importance of the strategic management as factor of survival of an ies - institution of higher education

The education sector has gone through changes that require the managers of Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) strategic and technical capabilities to operate the business and make them increasingly competitive in the face of new challenges. In a context where there is evidence of over-supply of HEI’s, the ability to monitor the environment, identify opportunities to purchase, joint financial engineering for purchases and consolidate business strategy aligned to a central become preconditions for maintenance competitiveness. Given these challenges, was made an exploratory research, which used design as a case study through which to identify a HEI, located in the region of Campinas, the motivations to purchase at the end of 2007 another HEI. In this sense it was evaluated the forms of environmental monitoring that were adopted, if the purchase is entered into a deliberate strategy or resulted from an emerging strategy and whether there were impacts on the organizational structure and processes. The results show that the acquisition was based on monitoring of the environment and organizational criteria supported by the theories on strategy, and observed signs that the functioning of the organizational structure is mainly hampered by the lack of qualified workforce to their needs
